This is a competitive selection process that honors outstanding students. First year Ph.D. students are supported by the Graduate Program funds while they take classes and conduct required laboratory rotations. During the spring of the first year, all students select a mentor for their dissertation work. Training grant faculty can nominate students who show productivity and potential in toxicology research during their second- to fourth-year of graduate training.

Selection is based on the overall performance of the candidate shown in GRE scores, GPA scores, research productivity, and on the commitment of the candidate to the research programs within the scope of NIEHS mission. Nominees must be US citizens or permanent residents. The HuGER Training Program Director and Executive Committee review nominees and select new HuGER predoctoral trainees.

Funding for predoctoral students is set according to NIH guidelines, and consists of a $20,772/year stipend. The funding package also includes $3,461 for tuition and fees and $650 for travel. Predoctoral students are also eligible for an additional $4,200 in training related expenses, including health insurance. Therefore, the total funding amount is $29,083.
